The Department of Police and Emergency Management (DPEM) is implementing a new strategy to provide stability and certainty now, and to build a platform for our future.

Tasmania Police will undertake a restructure which will examine geographical boundaries of police districts, assess the potential for efficiencies in support commands and specialist units, and seek expressions of interest in redundancies from police officers and State Service personnel.

The number of redundancies being considered will be governed by a range of factors including balancing service delivery requirements and building a sustainable budget position going forward.

“While our reduced budget has been the catalyst for this change, we are taking the opportunity to develop a framework that will continue our strong performance record of policing and emergency management and serve Tasmanians well into the future,” said the Commissioner of Police,  Darren Hine.

The initial phase of the restructure will involve the merging of the Southern and Eastern Districts; to be known as the Southern District.  The amalgamation will commence on 1 September 2012.  It is expected to save around $635,000 per year through rationalisation of management and administration positions, including the position of Eastern District Commander.

“Importantly there will be no impact on the community from a policing perspective; this is a change that will only affect internal administration services,” said Mr Hine.

“The new framework will be designed around the principles of maintaining a flexible organisation that is able to respond to changing financial and social environments while maintaining our professionalism and ongoing commitment to the community,” Mr Hine said.
