Police are at the scene of a double murder at Hamilton.

Just after 5am this morning, police were called to a property at Hamilton Plains Road, where they found a 31-year-old woman and 34-year-old man deceased from gunshot wounds.

The caller told police that the alleged offender, a 59-year-old man, had abducted a one-year-old child and had left the property.

Police instigated a search, and the alleged offender was later located at Lachlan with a gunshot wound to the head. He is in the Royal Hobart Hospital in a critical condition. The one-year-old boy was not harmed.

It is believed the two victims and alleged offender were from Ouse.
