Don’t overindulge: make the festive season fun for everyone
Tasmanians have been reminded to enjoy themselves but don’t overindulge this festive season.
Tasmania Police will have a high visibility presence in entertainment areas of Hobart, Launceston, Devonport and Burnie over the festive period, including New Year’s Eve on Thursday.
“The additional high visibility Police foot patrols will visit licensed premises, engage with people enjoying a night out and deter anti-social behaviour, violence and alcohol-related offences,” said Senior Sergeant Ian Mathewson, of the Southern District.
“Police frequently deal with the consequences of when people drink to excess. This includes violence and other anti-social behaviour,” said Senior Sgt Mathewson.
“This is not just an issue for Police, it affects other emergency services and health department resources, including demand on Emergency Departments.
“We’re asking people to take personal responsibility for their drinking so they don’t increase the risk of either becoming an offender or a victim,” said Senior Sgt Mathewson.
“We want people to have a good time, but ask people not to over indulge and ruin the fun for everyone else. Look out for your friends if they’ve had too much to drink and make sure they get home safely.
“What starts out as a fun night out can easily become a situation that involves violence when too much alcohol is involved.”
