A disqualified driver has been charged after a piece of firewood from the unsecured load on his unregistered truck smashed through the windscreen of another car, narrowly missing a woman’s head and landing in the backseat of her car.

The wood landed next to an empty child seat and the 38-year-old woman driver from Forth received minor injuries.

There were no other passengers in the car when the incident occurred about 3pm yesterday on Forth Rd, Forth in a 100km/hr speed zone.

The 36-year-old Devonport man driving the truck has been charged with driving while disqualified, driving an unregistered motor vehicle, dishonestly displaying registration plates calculated to deceive and driving with an unsecured load.

The truck was also clamped for 90 days.

Sergeant Shane Flude said:

“This was an extremely frightening experience for the woman and came very close to resulting in a fatal crash.

“For safety reasons it’s so important to properly secure a load, whether it be wood or any other item in a trailer, in a ute tray or on roof racks,” he said.

The man was bailed to appear in the Devonport Magistrates Court on 10 April, 2018.
