Digital Upgrade Project
Tasmania Police is undertaking a comprehensive $16.3 million Digital Upgrade Project to provide a fully digital radio network and replace core infrastructure.
The Project commenced in January 2010 and is scheduled to be completed by August 2012.
The upgrade of the network will enable digital voice transmissions to be used by Tasmania Police across the state by May next year.
Some digital communications are currently available within the urban areas of Hobart, Launceston and Devonport for particular police operations, with further work in the urban areas enabling digital communications to be more widely used by December 2011.
The Project has delivered two new data centres, with new core network equipment and new dispatch terminals, which are currently undergoing testing. When this equipment is commissioned, work to expand the existing digital communications can begin.
The Project has experienced minor delays due to the complex nature of integration of old legacy systems with new equipment. However, it is anticipated that the project will be finalised by August 2012.
