Death of Danish tourist investigated

Tasmania Police will prepare a report for the Coroner in relation to the death of a 26 year old man at Oatlands today, 17 February 2014.

The man, on holidays in Tasmania from his home in Denmark, had been camping at Oatlands. Just before 9am this morning, the man was found deceased in his camper by his male travelling companion.

While the Coroner will determine the cause of death, investigations indicate that the man had been drinking a ‘tea’ made from poppy capsules.

“The death of this young man while on an overseas holiday is a tragedy for his family and friends,” said Sergeant Nick Preshaw.

“It is a sad reminder that the narcotics contained in poppy capsules are extremely dangerous, and ingesting poppy products can be lethal or cause serious illness.”

There was a poppy related death in Tasmania in 2012 and one in 2011.

Police would also like to warn that the theft of poppy capsules is a serious offence and can result in charges under the Misuse of Drugs Act as well as charges of Trespass and Stealing.

Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death are continuing.
