Death in custody investigation
Detectives at the Eastern District Criminal Investigation Branch, Tasmania Police, are currently investigating the sudden death of a 40 year old man at the Risdon Prison Complex. The deceased was on remand for murder.
The male was located deceased in his cell at approximately 1130am on Sunday the 6 May 2012. Police attended the scene and were on site conducting a detailed scene examination, interviews with fellow inmates, checking of CCTV footage and enquiries outside the prison complex.
Detective Inspector Riley stated: “At this point in time from enquiries that we've conducted it doesn't appear to us that the death is suspicious, however, we want to be 100 per cent sure of that. For that reason investigators will continue with the investigation over the coming days, including further enquiries at the prison complex but also further enquiries off site as well”. The Justice Department is fully assisting investigators with their enquiries.
The deceased’s next of kin has been advised of the death.
Should the media have any further questions in relation to this matter, they can attend the Bellerive Police Station on Monday morning at 0930am, and Detective Inspector Riley will be available to answer questions.
