On Friday 11 July 2014 police closed the West Tamar Highway at Sidmouth between Spring Hill Road and Valley Road whilst they investigated a fatal pedestrian accident which had occurred at approximately 6:10pm that evening.
At approximately 7:15 pm during the period of road closure a blue Honda Accord sedan being driven in a northerly direction on the West Tamar Highway disobeyed a direction of police to stop at the road closure location at the intersection of Springhill Road. The vehicle passed police at speed and entered the section of road closed. The vehicle refused to stop at the direction of several police at the actual crash site. The vehicle accelerated through the crash site at a speed estimated in excess of 100km/h. Police were forced to take evasive action to move out of the way of the speeding vehicle. The vehicle continued through the Valley Road intersection road closure point at high speed again disobeying the direction to stop by police at the road closure point.
The incident was witnessed by several police and civillians who were at the scene.
On 12 July 2014 police fitted a steering wheel clamp to the blue Honda Accord Sedan under the provisions of the Police Offences Act 1935 relating to anti hooning.
