Damage Caused By Small Explosive Devices
Tasmania Police have concerns in relation to two incidents which occurred overnight.
Both incidents, one at Mt Nelson and one at South Hobart involved the use of what appears to be small explosive devices, being placed in letter boxes. The device placed in the letterbox at Mt Nelson detonated destroying the letter box. The device placed in the letter box at South Hobart failed to detonate. The device was subsequently found by the home owner.
A/Inspector Hodge of Hobart Police Station stated:
“Both incidents are concerning as they have involved the use of small explosive devices, placed in letter boxes. The device that detonated at Mt Nelson caused significant damage to the letter box. Our concern is that the home owner finding such a device and not knowing what it is or persons passing by such a device when it detonates could suffer serious injuries.”
Uniform Police and a member of the Bomb Response Group attended and will be investigating the design of and parts used in the device located at South Hobart. The device was rendered safe and was forensically examined.
Acting Inspector Hodge stated that “These devices appear to be used as a nuisance factor and to cause damage to property. However, the concern is that there is a chance for injury to occur. Anyone who may locate a similar device in their letter box is advised not to touch it and to contact Police.”
Police would like to hear from any members of the public who may have any information that will assist in identifying the persons responsible.
Police can be contacted on 131 444 or through Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
