Cyclist Crash
A 64 year old man from Sandy Bay is in the Royal Hobart Hospital in a serious but stable condition after a bicycle crash on Colebrook Road approximately 10 kilometres north of Colebrook at 10.10am on Wednesday 26th September 2012.
A group of approximately 10 mature age cyclists were riding their bicycles south bound on Colebrook Road. The front wheel on one bicycle clipped the rear wheel of the bicycle in front. This caused the riders of these bicycles (a 62 year old man from Taroona and a 33 year old man from Midway Point) to lose control of their bicycles and fall onto the roadway. The 62 year old man received a minor arm injury, the 33 year of male was not injured.
The above crash caused the following riders to slow and take evasive action. The handlebars of two of these bicycles became entangled and the riders of both (a 64 year old man from Sandy Bay and a 56 year old man from Howrah) lost control of their bicycles and both fell to the road. The 64 year old received serious head injuries and the other rider minor injuries.
Three of the riders were conveyed to the Royal Hobart Hospital; two of them had minor injuries. The 64 year old man was admitted in a serious but stable condition. All riders were wearing appropriate protective clothing and bicycle helmets.
The crash is being investigated by Constable Gordon JAMIESON of the Bellerive Traffic Office, Southern Police District.
