Coronial recommendations re McInerney death
Tasmania Police notes the recommendations of the Coroner Olivia McTaggart regarding the death of Robert Edward McInerney in Cooee on 24 May, 2016.
In particular, we note the Coroner’s findings regarding the professional conduct of responding Tasmania Police officers.
In her findings Coroner McTaggart said:
- At the time of his death Mr McInerney had the specific intention of ending his life.
- All police officers who attended the incident acted in accordance with the Tasmania Police Manual.
- Senior Constable Will Flynn’s actions throughout the incident were ‘exemplary’.
- Significant credit must go to Professional Standards for its comprehensive, professional and impartial investigation.
Commissioner Darren Hine said:
“Despite attending officers’ attempts to de-escalate the situation Mr McInerney died after being shot by police and our thoughts and sympathies continue to be with his family.
“No police officer wishes to be faced with the circumstances of that day; it was a tragic outcome.
“Following the inquest it is now possible to publicly acknowledge the officers involved for their professional and courageous actions in trying to protect lives.
“The incident and the time since then has been difficult for the officers involved, their families and work colleagues, and they have been offered support throughout.”
