Cornelian Bay Cemetery | Burglary Charges

Two people have been charged with burglary and stealing, following an investigation into the Cornelian Bay cemetery burglary on Monday.

Detectives from Glenorchy CIB have searched a unit in Leonard Avenue, Moonah this morning and recovered power tools and other property stolen from the cemetery.

A 24-year-old man, and a 20-year-old woman, from Leonard Avenue, Moonah were interviewed and charged by detectives this morning.  Both were bailed to appear in the Hobart Magistrates Court on 10 April 2017.

A third person, a 33-year-old man is alleged to be involved. Police know his identity and are making enquiries as to his current location.

The alleged offenders were charged with burglary and stealing of the cemetery grounds shed, along with stealing a white Toyota Hilux 4WD, registration FL 0047, from a funeral business premises at the cemetery.

“It is really pleasing to be able to recover these power tools and other items, which are integral for this not-for-profit organisation to be able to continue its great work in our community,” said Detective Inspector Craig Joel of Glenorchy CIB.

“The group does a great job restoring headstones for war veterans,” he said.
