Conduct of Major Crime Investigation – Southern Tasmania
Tasmania Police are currently conducting a major crime investigation at a variety of locations including:
- Warruga Street and Sorell Street, Bridgewater
- East Bagdad Road, Bagdad
- South Street, Bellerive.
Police crime scenes have been established at the Warruga Street and East Bagdad locations.
As a result of an investigation into the production and distribution of speed, investigators became aware of an unreported death which occurred in 2010.
Investigators are following specific lines of enquiry in relation to the investigation. The operation involves 92 members of Tasmania Police. Officers involved in the operation include:
- 32 Detectives from the Criminal Investigation Branches at Bellerive, Bridgewater, Glenorchy and Hobart
- 12 Detectives from the Drug Investigation Services
- 46 uniform officers
- Specialist officers from Forensics and Forensic Science Service Tasmania
- Four detection dogs including a cadaver dog from NSW
- The State Emergency Service has also provided logistical support.
The investigation has been ongoing for some time and the police activities today are one aspect of that operation. The investigation into the death will continue for some time.
At 6am today, 92 officers were briefed and deployed to the four locations. Crime scenes were established at Warruga Street, Bridgewater and East Bagdad Road, Bagdad. It is anticipated that these two locations will be the focus of police enquiries for a number of days which will involve detailed examinations and long hours. At present, a number of persons are assisting investigators with our enquiries.
At this stage it is not possible to provide any further details in relation to the investigation as it may jeopardise the operation.
