Commissioner of Police appointed to Advisory Panel

I am pleased to be to be part of the Advisory Panel to reduce violence against women, announced by the Prime Minister.

As Police Commissioner, a husband and father, and an ambassador for White Ribbon for the past 7 years, I am committed to reducing the impact of violence against women, their children and the community.

Family violence is an issue of national significance and the Taskforce is an opportunity to work together as a community to bring about a cultural shift in attitudes that accept violence against women and children.

It is never acceptable.

Every day, Police hear the excuses made for family violence. Violence is always unacceptable and it is never the victim’s fault.

I am passionate about making a contribution to changing those attitudes. It is police who are first responders, but as a community we are all responsible for putting a stop to family violence.

Particularly as male role models, we must encourage respectful behaviour and speak up against violent behaviour or attitudes that condone it.

If you or anyone you know is a victim of violence, talk to police or someone who can help. It’s never too late to report and there are a number of agencies and services available which can provide you with assistance.
