Cold Case Unit investigation at Lake Leake

The Tasmania Police Cold Case Unit has completed a search of a Lake Leake property. Personnel had been at the property from Thursday September 2 to Tuesday September 7.

The property was searched pursuant to a search warrant and declared a crime scene for the duration of the search.

The officer in charge of the Cold Case Unit, Detective Inspector Glenn Lathey, said he was not prepared to confirm the identity of the occupants of the property nor, in fairness to the occupants, the precise nature of the “number of serious crimes” being investigated there.

“I can now confirm that the Cold Case Unit is actively investigating two unsolved murders – the August 2006 murder at Lake Leake of John Lewis Thorn and the July 1992 murder at Nugent of Ronald Frederick Jarvis,” Insp Lathey said.

“Whilst both murders were thoroughly investigated at the time, they remain unsolved and have therefore been identified as cold cases and referred to the Cold Case Unit for review and reinvestigation in accordance with Tasmania Police policy.

“As with any investigation, and specifically acknowledging the passage of time, we continue to seek any information not previously passed on to police and remind people there is a $100,000 reward posted in relation to the Thorn murder and a $30,000 reward posted in relation to the Jarvis murder.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
