Climber rescued after fall at Ben Lomond

At 11.25am on Monday 22 November 2010, Tasmania Police were alerted to a 20 year old West Australian man who had suffered a fall whilst rock climbing solo on Rock a Day pitch at Ben Lomond. The alarm was raised by the man after his fall using a mobile phone.

Due to the proximity to the cliff rescuers were unable to winch the man to safety with the rescue helicopter.

Search and Rescue crews from Tasmania Police, State Emergency Service and Tasmania Ambulance Service were required to undertake a protracted operation.

The operation involved members climbing the pitch to the man’s location, stabilising his injuries and lowering him to an area which was suitable for extraction by helicopter to Launceston General Hospital.

It is believed the man has suffered hip and spinal injuries as well as lacerations to his leg and some minor head injuries.
