Clandestine Drug Laboratory

A man and a woman will appear in the Hobart Magistrates Court today charged with the manufacture of a controlled drug.

The woman, aged 38 from Clarendon Vale, and the man, aged 43 from New Norfolk, were charged after materials for use in the manufacture of methylamphetamine were found in a shed in Mornington.

A 27-year-old man from Mornington was charged with other drug offences and will appear in court at a later date.

At approximately 10.00pm on Wednesday 6 July members of Tasmania Police attended a residence in Mornington to conduct enquiries in relation to an outstanding matter.

Upon arrival at the residence the members attention was immediately drawn to a shed at the rear of the premises. Upon entering the shed a chemical smell was detected and a number of items associated with the manufacture of illicit drugs were observed.

Three people at the residence were taken into custody and the shed was evacuated until the arrival of Tasmania Fire Service (TFS) Hazmat members. The TFS members conducted a safety assessment of the site and rendered it safe.

A thorough examination of the shed was conducted by police and numerous exhibits were seized.

An initial analysis of a substance removed from the shed has tested positive to the presence of methylamphetamine, however further examination will be required to determine the quantity and purity of the substance.

Police will allege that two persons located on the property were involved in the production of the methylamphetamine in the shed after setting up a small unsophisticated clandestine laboratory.
