Claim of racism rejected

Tasmania Police is disappointed in the allegations made by Michael Mansell against the police officer based at Flinders Island.

While it is ultimately up to the Coroner to determine the cause of death, Police are regularly asked to comment on the possible factors involved in the serious and fatal crashes they attend.

Police campaign strongly on the offences which contribute to road trauma, and it is appropriate that police make timely comment on clear factors in crashes to contribute to road safety education.  Inattention, speed, inexperience and alcohol and drugs are most commonly cited crash factors from police at the scene, whilst recognising the decision is one for the Coroner.

Sergeant Judges made comment on likely factors in the Cape Barren Island crash on 1 October 2012 which were based on his investigations and were not in any way racist.

There was no intention to cause distress to Mr Thomas’ family.
