Charges over serious crimes
Hobart CIB Detectives arrested three people yesterday and over the weekend for a number of unrelated serious offences committed across Hobart and the Eastern Shore in recent months.
An 18 year old Bridgewater man has been charged with 1 count of aggravated burglary and stealing at residences near Hobart while the families slept inside. He has also been charged with 5 counts of motor vehicle stealing and 1 count of attempting to unlawfully set fire to one of the vehicles. The value of the property allegedly stolen or damaged is more than $105,000. The 18 year old will appear in the Hobart Magistrates Court on 16 May 2011.
A 27 year old man from Hobart has been charged with 3 counts of aggravated burglary and stealing at residences in Glenorchy and Hobart while the families slept inside. He was also charged with 2 counts of motor vehicle stealing, 5 counts of fraud and 1 count of burglary. The value of the property allegedly stolen is more than $15,000. The man will appear in the Hobart Magistrates Court on 16 May 2011.
Detectives have also charged a male youth with 16 counts of motor vehicle stealing near Hobart and across the Eastern Shore, including Bellerive, Brighton and Old Beach. The value of property allegedly stolen or damaged by the youth is almost $70,000.
The 16 year old from Rokeby will be dealt with according to the provisions of the Youth Justice Act.
“It is concerning that many of these crimes were committed while the occupants, including children, were asleep inside. On most occasions doors and windows were left unlocked,” said Acting Inspector Craig Joel.
Acting Inspector Craig Joel urged people to make it harder for opportunistic offenders by securing their vehicles and locking the doors and windows of their homes.
