Charges laid against armed robbers

Launceston CIB have charged two people in relation to an incident that occurred yesterday afternoon at the Commonwealth Bank in Scottsdale.

Just before 4.00pm on Wednesday 15 June 2011, a man entered the Commonwealth Bank in King Street, Scottsdale. The man threatened one of the bank tellers with a knife and demanded cash. The man also threatened a customer in the bank with the knife, again demanding cash from her. The man then fled the scene after obtaining an undisclosed sum of cash from the customer.

Witnesses observed the man getting into a white hatch back vehicle near the bank and obtained a partial registration plate number. This later assisted police in locating and intercepting a vehicle on the Lilydale Roadjust north of Rocherlea at about 5.45pm that evening.

As a result of further enquiries by police a 26 year old man from Newnham was subsequently charged with attempted armed robbery; armed robbery, driving offences, drug offences and attempting to escape police custody. He will appear in the Launceston Court of Petty Sessions at 11.30am today.

A 46 year old woman from Ravenswood was also charged with the attempted armed robbery and armed robbery at the bank. She will appear in court at a later date.

Tasmania Police would like to thank those members of the public who provided information that assisted in the investigation of the incident. “We would appreciate hearing from any members of the public who saw a white, older model, Toyota hatchback vehicle acting suspiciously in and around the Scottsdale CBD area, during the course of yesterday afternoon” said Detective Senior Sergeant ORR.
