Brighton Bypass Speed Restrictions
The new Brighton bypass that opened on Monday 12 November 2012 has a current speed limit of 80km per hour. This speed limit is very well sign posted and is a temporary measure.
The speed limit has been imposed by the Department of Infrastructure, Energy and Resources (DIER). The reason for the reduced speed limit is due to a large amount of loose gravel still on the road surface. This loose gravel has already resulted in damage to motor vehicles with some complaints being received of broken windscreens. The speed reduction is also for the protection of wildlife in the area until they become more familiar with the new highway running through their natural habitat.
The road surface is continually being assessed and the speed limit will be increased as soon as it is deemed safe. At this stage DIER anticipates increasing the 80km restriction by the 23rd November.
Tasmania Police impress upon all motorists to adhere to 80km speed limit not only for your personal safety, but also for the protection of your own vehicle, other motorists’ vehicles and also for the protection of wildlife.
This speed limit is only a short term measure, and the area will have a visible police presence in the coming weeks.
