Body of man located – Evandale

Police today recovered a body of a man in the South Esk River near Leighlands Road, Evandale.

The body was discovered about midday during an ongoing search for missing 63 year old Mr Peter Watson who was swept away in floodwaters in the early hours of Tuesday, 7 June 2016. Mr Watson’s partner was airlifted to safety during the rescue.

Acting Inspector Phil Summers, of Deloraine Division, said that the body was believed to be that of Mr Watson, however a post mortem examination would be conducted.

“While this is a very sad time for Mr Watson’s family and loved ones, we hope this will provide them with some closure.”

Police thanked Mr Watson’s family and other volunteers for assisting in the extensive search.

“The 15 day search involved Search and Rescue personnel in the water and on the ground, Search and Rescue dogs, the Westpac Rescue Helicopter, SES volunteers and police officers from the Deloraine Division working tirelessly alongside Mr Watson’s family and volunteers,” Acting Inspector Summers said.

“Our thoughts are with Mr Watson’s family and loved ones at this difficult time.”
