Blood alcohol more than 8x legal limit

A 25 year old Ringarooma man has been charged with a number of offences after he returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.404% after he crashed his car last month.

Police were called to reports of a car hooning in the Ringarooma area last month and attended to find the driver had lost control and crashed into a culvert.  He was passed out on police arrival and was taken by ambulance to the North East Soldiers Memorial Hospital at Scottsdale.

The driver was not injured, however, due to the level of his intoxication was incapable of providing a sample of his breath for analysis.  Attending police used their powers under the Road Safety (Alcohol and Drugs) Act to take a sample of the man’s blood which was sent for analysis. The results show the man’s blood alcohol level was 0.404%; more than eight times over the limit.  His driver’s licence will be immediately be disqualified for 24 months.

The man will appear in the Scottsdale Court at a later date charged with a number of offences including Drink Driving and Driving whilst Disqualified.

“We were expecting the blood alcohol level to be quite a bit over the limit given the circumstances in which he was located but a reading this high is shocking.  He’s lucky he didn’t kill himself or another road user,” Sergeant Jayson Taws from the Scottsdale Police Station.
