Bass Highway Crashes
At approximately 6:45am today, 21 May 2013, Police, Ambulance, Fire Service and DIER personnel were called to a collision on the Bass Highway near Waverley Road junction at Don in the West bound lanes. A heavy rigid truck and trailer along with 3 sedans were involved. A driver of one of the cars was conveyed to the Mersey Community Hospital at Latrobe with minor injuries. One of the cars involved rolled onto its roof.
While emergency services were in attendance a second crash, involving a single vehicle, occurred within the area where Police were attempting to control the flow of traffic. Nobody was injured.
The truck was temporarily repaired at the scene and able to be driven away. All 4 cars were extensively damaged and required towing.
Emergency services diverted suitable west bound traffic through Cutts Road and arranged for large vehicles to be escorted through the scene. In total the Bass Highway was blocked for 2 hours, although disruption was kept to a minimum.
‘Brifen Wire’ median fencing prevented the vehicles from entering the oncoming traffic lanes during the collision.
Preliminary investigations suggest inattention to be the primary cause of both crashes and that excessive speed or alcohol were not contributing factors. Investigations are continuing with no charges pending at this stage.
Police would like to thank motorists for their patience and co-operation this morning while attempting to resolve traffic congestion issues; however it was disappointing that emergency service personnel in attendance were at times subjected to abuse or put at risk by some drivers refusing to slow down or drive to the conditions. Police attempt to keep the speed of vehicles though crash scenes to a minimum for reasons of public safety and emergency service and recovery personnel working in a hazardous environment.
Any person witnessing the crash is encouraged to contact Devonport Police on 64217511 or 131 444.
