Australian Taxation Office phone scam

Tasmania Police is currently investigating reports relating to a number of people falling victim to an ATO telephone scam.

The ATO tax scam involves a victim being ‘cold called’ and advised that they have an outstanding bill with the Australian Taxation Office which must be paid immediately.

Investigations are being conducted by Tasmania Police’s Fraud & e-Crime Investigation Services within the Serious Organised Crime Division, in conjunction with other mainland state police services, the ATO and external agencies.

Tasmania Police advise members of the public who may receive a phone call of this nature, or any phone call/email/sms allegedly from the ATO requesting payment, to discontinue communication and immediately report it to the ATO directly on 13 28 61.
