Attempted aggravated armed robbery charges

At approximately 9.20pm on Wednesday 9 November 2011, a man and a woman who were walking in Wellington Street, Launceston, were confronted by two male youths one of whom was armed with a pair of scissors. One of the youths has threatened the male victim and demanded money from him.

The man and his female companion were not in possession of any money. The two youths then escorted the couple to a nearby ATM and demanded money once again. After attempts to extract money from the ATM were unsuccessful, both youths fled the scene on foot.

Due to a prompt police response both youths were quickly apprehended within the Launceston CBD. The youths, aged 14 and 15 years were later interviewed and charged with attempted aggravated armed robbery. The youths were held in custody and are due to appear in the Launceston Court of Petty Sessions Youth Justice Division on Thursday 10 November 2011.
