Arrest over incendiary devices

Four incendiary devices were dealt with by Tasmania Police in public locations on the Eastern Shore of Hobart:

  • Saturday, 19 February 2011, the Esplanade in Lindisfarne when a device was found on a vehicle
  • Monday, 21 February 2011, in Cornwall Street, Rose Bay, when a device was located in the street gutter
  • Wednesday, 23 February 2011, on a bush track off Flagstaff Gully Road in Lindisfarne
  • Saturday, 26 February 2011, at Kangaroo Bluff, Bellerive.

With the exception of the 26 February 2011, police cordons were established around the devices and the Tasmania Police Bomb Response Group deployed to remove the packages.

Police believe that all four incendiary devices are linked and were made by the same person.  They are made from basic materials including soda stream bottles, crushed fire bricks, spray cans, sparklers, electrical tape and brown wrapping.

At 11am on Sunday 27 February 2011, investigators from the Eastern District Criminal Investigation Branch apprehended and charged an 18 year old Lindisfarne man with four counts of ‘commit a nuisance’ in relation to these devices.  He was presented before an out of hours sitting of the Hobart Magistrates Court and was remanded in custody until  Monday morning the 28 February 2011.

It is believed that there are no further devices.

Anyone who has information should call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or the Eastern District Criminal Investigation Branch on 62302318.
