Arrest in Launceston
Launceston CIB detectives have arrested a 34 year old Launceston man for possessing a firearm in Crawford St, Mowbray, around 11pm last night, 11August 2013.
The man had a semi automatic shotgun and a knife. The firearm was unregistered and the man did not have a firearms licence.
He will appear in the Launceston Magistrate’s Court this afternoon, charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, possession of a dangerous article in a public place and a number of firearm offences.
The offender is an associate of people who live in Crawford Street, and this incident is believed to be linked to the discharge of a firearm in the same street on Saturday night.
Neighbours of a property in Crawford Street reported hearing shots fired around 11pm on Saturday night. Witnesses saw a dark coloured 4 wheel drive or utility speeding away.
Police found 2 cartridges in the street, and there was minor damage to the carport and the brickwork of a residence.
“There were three adults and a 10 year old child at home at the time,” said Detective Constable Jason Bolton.
“We believe this is not a random incident. These are groups of people who know each other and it is believed to be linked to 3 previous shooting incidents in Launceston,” said Detective Constable Bolton.
“It is frustrating that there’s been little information or assistance from those who appear to be targeted. On this occasion no one was injured but when a firearm is discharged there is always the potential for serious consequences.”
Anyone who has information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
