Aircraft landing incident, Wynyard

Approximately 22.42 hours on Monday the 20th of September 2010 police were advised by AUSSAR that a small aircraft carrying two passengers was in the vicinity of Wynyard having mechanical failure with the front landing gear.

Police were advised that the aircraft had only 45 minutes flight time and would circle the airport until emergency services arrived so they could attempt an emergency landing.

Tasmania Police, Tasmania Fire Service and Tasmania Ambulance attended the Burnie / Wynyard airport.

The aircraft circled for approximately 30 minutes and conducted an emergency landing.

The aircraft touched nose down on the runway and glided for approximately 220 metres until it came to a complete stop.

Service crews attended the aircraft and located the 2 passengers (the chief pilot and co-pilot) who had exited the plane. There were no injuries. Only minor damage was sustained to the aircraft.

The runway was inspected for debris and damage and was cleared as still being safe for operation.

Thanks to the proficiency of both pilots the emergency landing was controlled with minimal impact.

The matter is being dealt with by the general Manager of the Burnie / Wynyard airport and AUSSAR.
