AFL GRAND FINAL

Tasmania Police is preparing for what is expected to be a very busy day on Saturday 28 September as party-goers celebrate AFL Grand Final Day.

While police wish for the general community to enjoy the football, unfortunately they see instances where excess alcohol consumption leads to serious injury or death on our roads, and increased anti-social behaviour.

“We’ll have extra police resources on AFL Grand Final Day to ensure community safety both in and around the busy entertainment precincts and licensed premises, including Salamanca, the waterfront as well as city areas,” Southern District Support Services Senior Sergeant Ben Duffey said.

“We’ll also be increasing mobile patrols throughout the day and evening, operating throughout city areas, focussing on drink and drug driving, and other traffic related enforcement activities that will focus on speed detection, inattention, failing to wear seatbelts and mobile phones while driving.”

Tasmania Police strongly encourages party-goers to pre-arrange a designated driver, to use public transport or to organise a taxi. If hosting a party at home, be responsible and ensure there is plenty of food, be aware of how much your friends are drinking and ensure they can get home safely.

“We want everyone to enjoy AFL Grand Final Day in the way it is meant to be enjoyed; safely and in the company of good friends and family. Let’s not make it memorable for the wrong reasons,” Senior Sergeant Ben Duffey said.
