Abalone poachers apprehended on West Coast

Two men from NSW, aged 45 years and 38 years respectively, were arrested on Saturday and charged with trafficking in fish.

A targeted Marine operation being conducted by Marine and Rescue Services on Saturday 31st January 2015, observed the offenders conducting illegal fishing activities at West Point Reserve situated 5 km south of Marrawah on the States West Coast.

The two men were intercepted by police in separate vehicles on West Point Reserve road.  Police searched the vehicles and located 3 Large Styrofoam boxes containing abalone meat, and diving equipment.

The total number of abalone seized by police was 862 individual abalone meats.

The statutory special penalties upon conviction could be in the region of $120,000 each.
