000 calls from a lost bush walker

Last night around 6.15pm police received four ‘000’ emergency calls from a man claiming he was lost in bushland near a dam at George Town.  His mobile phone signal was distorted and then lost.  The call had a poor connection on each occasion and details were difficult to obtain.  Police have not been able to identify the caller from the mobile number nor from our investigations so far other than to confirm the call originated east of George Town.

Last night police searched bushland near Curries River Dam until around 2am this morning without finding the man.  A small white Toyota Camry was located in bushland in the area by police during that search around 1.00 am.  The vehicle did not appear to have been there for an extended period of time and may relate to the missing man, however registration and engine details are false do not link to any person.  There is a strong likelihood that the vehicle is related to the missing man.

This morning Tasmania Police, SES and Mounted Search and Rescue will continue the search of the area for the missing man.  However if any member of the public is aware of anyone who has not returned home from the Curries River Dam area overnight or knows of the person who made the ‘000’ call, please let us know.  Significant resources will be used to try and locate the man today and any information will help firstly identify who is missing and whether or not he has walked out and is now safe will greatly assist search efforts.
